Changes in Purchasing Diabetic Testing Supplies for Medicare Patients Only:
On July 1, 2013, Medicare implemented a new mail-order program for patients using diabetic testing supplies such as test strips and lancets. Patients with Traditional Medicare coverage will now have the option to have supplies delivered directly to their home or may purchase them up at a local store that is enrolled in Medicare. You should have received a letter from Medicare with additional details or click on the following link to view a copy. Patients covered by a Medicare Advantage Plan should have received information directly from their HMO or PPO plan if their supplier changed. Please contact your Medicare Advantage Plan directly for more information.
You may access a list of suppliers by clicking here or by going to Medicare.gov/supplier and entering your zip code.
Please note that suppliers may not all carry the same brand of supplies. If you prefer to use a glucometer from a company not covered by your pharmacy, you may wish to contact that manufacturer directly to find a participating pharmacy that does cover it. Medicare’s anti-switching rule prohibits suppliers from influencing patients to switch to another brand. However, you may inquire about other brands offered and choose to switch on your own if you prefer.
Contact numbers for manufacturers of various glucometers are available online, and are usually on a label on the back of your meter.
